Why Is FNV Out of Memory

Fallout New Vegas is a well-famed action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment. As a revolutionary shooting game, Fallout New Vegas has attracted a number of fans. However, there are still some bugs remaining that cause Fallout New Vegas out of memory.

As a 32-bit game, Fallout New Vegas is supposed to be limited to a maximum of 4GB of RAM. However, some bugs prevent it from using more than 2GB of RAM, even if you have more memory available on your system. Once it reaches this limit, the game can crash with an out-of-memory error.

Fortunately, the player community has spontaneously created several MODs to improve this problem. Keep reading to find the details.

How to Fix Fallout New Vegas Out of Memory

We will introduce two tools to increase the game memory limit so that you can escape the clutches of Fallout New Vegas out of memory.

Use the Fallout New Vegas 4GB Patcher

The first tool you can download and install is the Fallout New Vegas 4GB Patcher. It can extend the 2GB limitation to 4GB, which will greatly improve the out of memory issue.

Step 1: Click here to open the download page. Scroll down your screen, then hit MANUAL DOWNLOAD under 4GB Patcher. If there is a newer version of 4GB Patcher available, download the newer one.

Step 2: Extract the downloaded file with 7-Zip or other unzip tools. Then copy and paste the extracted files to the following location:

C:/ProgramsFiles (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas

Note that if this is not the location where your FNV is installed, you need to paste the extracted files into the actual location.

Step 3: Right-click on FalloutNVpatch.exe and select Run as administrator. This will execute the patcher and create a backup of the game’s original file.

Step 4: In the Fallout New Vegas folder, search for .ini files using the search box at the top-right of the explorer window.

Step 5: Right-click the first .ini file and select Properties.

Step 6: In the General tab, tick Read-only, then click Apply and OK to save the changes.

Step 7: Repeat the operations in Step 6 for all .ini files in the folder.

After finishing the above steps, you can relaunch the game to see if Fallout New Vegas out of memory is fixed.

Use Stutter Remover

Sometimes, you may find “Fallout New Vegas out of memory with 4GB patch”. In this case, using the Stutter Remover mod from Nexus Mods will work it out. Fallout New Vegas Stutter Remover, NVSR in short, is designed to fix performance issues experienced while playing Fallout New Vegas in lower-end systems.

Step 2: Right-click on the download patch file, and choose Extract Here. Subsequently, navigate to the Data folder that you just downloaded, and then locate Data > NVSE > Plugins.

Step 3: Press Ctrl + A to select all files and then press Ctrl + C to copy them. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer, then navigate to the game location:

C:/ProgramsFiles (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas

Pay attention that if this is not your FNV directory location, you need to go to the real one.

Step 4: Open the Data folder in the Fallout New Vegas folder, then create a new folder and name it NVSE.

Step 5: Open the NVSE folder you just created, and create a sub-folder inside it titled Plugins.

Step 6: Open the Plugins folder you created, then press Ctrl + V to paste those files that were copied in the previous step.

In addition, if you have installed a lot of mods, you can change a setting file to avoid further problems.

  2. Find bReplaceHeap inside the file and set its value to 0. The final effect should be bReplaceHeap=0.
